The MARYLAND DOVE is a recreation of the DOVE, a late 17th century English trading ship, one of two ships, the other one being the ARK , which made up the first expedition from England to the Province of Maryland in 1634. The expedition was undertaken by Cecilius Calvert, the 2nd Baron Baltimore.

The recreation was commissioned by the State of Maryland to celebrate the founding of Maryland. Her length overall (LOA) is 76 feet, with 56 feet on deck. Her beam is 17 feet wide, and she draws 7 feet. Propulsion is via 1,965 square feet of sail, with two Lehman 4-cylinder, Super 90 diesel engines as auxiliary.

MARYLAND DOVE was designed by a distinguished naval architect who was also a naval historian, William A. Baker , who curated the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Museum at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1963 until his passing in 1981.
