NSHOF Education Programs-with partners

National Sailing Center & Hall of Fame Education Initiatives

The National Sailing Center & Hall of Fame (NSCHOF) is working to bring together educators from across the country to provide a means to share resources and use our website to provide virtual displays for learners of all ages.

Locally, we are organizing pilot programs to provide an "education incubator" so that we can assist others in replicating these programs in their communities. Please contact us with your questions and ideas.

Here's a sampling of what we've been working on:

In January, our Education Director presented a workshop at US Sailing’s National Sailing Programs Symposium on Learning Math and Science with Sailing national consortium partners, Young Mariners Foundation.

We will present another workshop on partnering with public schools to promote sailing and the maritime industry later this Spring.

On February 26, in partnership with the Anne Arundel County Public School and the Eastport Yacht Club Foundation, NSCHOF will hold a Marine and Maritime Career Fair for the county's public school students in grades 8 - 12 and their parents. It will be held at Annapolis High School from 1-4pm.

Broad industry participation is expected. Below are links to registration forms and more information:

Two AACPS STEM Sailing Summer Bridge camps will be taught by NSCHOF staff, one for novice sailors and the other for those with some sailing experience.

New programs to engage students from the Stanton Center and the Annapolis High School’s Sojourner Douglass program in sailing skills are under development.

Planning began for a Marine and Maritime Careers Fair in partnership with the Anne Arundel Public Schools and the Eastport Yacht Club Foundation and development of  additional sailing and academic programming for AACPS students was initiated.

In September NSCHOF taught an eight week PBL class, "Finding Your Way on Land and Water," to all sophomores in the STEM program at South River High School. Students learned the use of handheld compasses, bearings, topographic maps, and nautical charts

Student learn math & science through sailing NSCHOF taught a two week STEM Summer Bridge Program in July to entering 10th and 11th grade students from the two STEM magnet programs at South River High School and North County High School.

In May youngsters from the Stanton Center enjoyed a unique learning excursion on SULTANA from the NSCHOF dock.

SD-pride In May students from both Sojourner Douglass Middle College program and the Center for Applied Technology South Marine Repair Technology enjoyed a half day learning excursion on PRIDE OF BALTIMORE II from the NSCHOF dock.

Initial activities with curricular material and students began in April 2010 with a six week STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) Problem Based Learning module with 104 freshmen at South River High School.  That culminated with a day-long field trip to the NSCHOF with sailing time as well as time spent touring the Robert Crown Sailing Center at the United States Naval Academy, where they learned about the newest YP on display.

In January, 2010 the National Sailing Center & Hall of Fame initiated a partnership with Anne Arundel County Public Schools to help students learn math and science through sailing and to raise awareness of marine and maritime careers.  This exciting opportunity could be replicated in your area. Please contact us if you would like assistance.

One of the highlights of the NSCHOF Sailing Center and the NSCHOF Education Program is the use of the Sandbaggers, BULL and BEAR.  These two replicas of the 1869 SUZY Q are not only magnificent to look at ashore and under sail but everyone from students to adults who have sailed them, rave about their exhilarating performance.

...the development of a strong education program at NSCHOF would not be possible without our Education Partners. Thank you!

We welcome new education partners. Please contact us to discuss the possibilities.
